regret后接不定式与接动名词
■regret to do sth 的意思是：对将要发生的事感到“遗憾”或“抱歉”。如：
I regret to tell you that he can’t come. 很抱歉他不能来。
I regret to say that you have failed your exam. 我很遗憾地告诉你，你考试不及格。
We regret to say that we are unable to help you. 很遗憾，我们不能帮助你。
We regret to say that we can’t accept your kind offer. 很抱歉我们不能接受你的友好提供。
We regret to inform you that your account is over drawn. 我们遗憾地通知你，你的账户已经透支了。
We regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you the job. 我们遗憾地通知你，我们没法给你这份工作。
We regret to inform passengers that the l4.50 train for Cardiff will leave approximately 37 minutes late. 我们遗憾地通知各位旅客，14点50分开往加的夫的火车大约晚开37分钟。
注：其后所接不定式通常是 to say, to tell, to inform 等，此时主语一般是第一人称，且 regret 通常只限于现在时。
■regret doing sth 的意思是：对已经发生的事感到“后悔”或“遗憾”。如：
I regret spending so much money. 我很后悔花了这么多钱。
I regret missing the film. 我懊悔没有看上那部电影。
I regret being unable to help. 我感到抱歉，不能帮助你。
I regret leaving the firm after twenty years. 我为经过20年后离开那家公司感到遗憾。
He said he so much regretted not being able to swim. 他说他对不会游泳感到非常遗憾。
I regret leaving school at 14一it was a big mistake. 我后悔14岁就辍学——这是个大错。
◎表示对已经发生的事感到“后悔”或“遗憾”，除后接动名词的一般式外，有时也接动名词的完成式。如：
He regretted doing [having done] it. 他后悔做了此事。
She regrets having said it. 她后悔说了这话。
Not a day passes when I don’t regret not having studied music in my youth. 投有一天我不后悔年轻的时候没有学音乐。
◎偶尔还可接不定式的完成式。如：
I regret not having [to have] worked harder. 我后悔当初没有更努力些。
◎若句中含有具体的过去时间状语，则以用动名词的一般式表示已发生的动作。如：
I regret going there yesterday. 我后悔昨天去了那儿。
